We were delighted to hear that Gill Smallwood, our Chief Executive has been recognised in the New Year Honours List for her services to victims of domestic violence. Gill was awarded an MBE for her longstanding work locally, both in the community and with Fortalice.
Gill has been our Chief Executive for over a decade and also sits on the Board of several local partnerships including Bolton Together and Fresh as a Daisy. She is a Governor for a local School and a Trustee for a secondary school. Over the years Gill has positioned Fortalice as the leading local providers for domestic abuse and mental health services whilst increasing income and staffing levels. During Gill’s stewardship the Charity has opened a new refuge, initiated and grown a service for children and young people, developed counselling for victims and their families and delivered educational programmes.
Gill said: “I am eternally grateful for this recognition, particularly to my family, friends and staff who have supported me. Throughout the pandemic our children and young people’s services have very much been out in the communities helping people. For me, it’s just wonderful to see people come to the services and watch them work through their trauma and distress and make a success story out of their lives.”
