Help and support for men experiencing domestic abuse
1 in 6 men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime. Men experiencing abuse can find it harder to talk about their situation. In fact, half of all male victims suffer in silence.
It is important to remember that domestic abuse does not discriminate by gender or sexual orientation. All victims have the same rights to access protection and support.
Many of our advice and support services are open to men. If you are experiencing domestic abuse or violence of any kind, please contact our 24-hour advice line on 01204 365677 or use our discreet online web chat (available weekdays from 12pm – 2pm).
We are here to help you take steps towards a safer, happier life.
Recognising the signs of domestic abuse
Domestic abuse can occur within a heterosexual or same-sex relationship, with a former partner or between family members. It’s rarely a one-off event and incidents can get more severe over time. It can take many different forms, from bullying and controlling behaviour to physical and sexual abuse. Take a look at some of the types of domestic abuse.
If you have to change your behaviour or appearance because of how your partner may react, it’s likely you are being abused. If you fear for your personal safety and wellbeing at home, it’s likely you are a victim of domestic abuse.
GP support
Sometimes it’s easier to seek help through your doctor. If you are being abused, hurt or controlled by someone in your family, just ask for IRIS at your local Bolton GP practice or mention IRIS when you call to book an appointment.
Bolton GPs and their surgery staff are trained to handle requests for help discreetly. They will refer you through to one of our specialist support workers so you can access the help and advice you need.
Children and young people
We offer a range of support for boys and teenagers aged 5 to 19 who have witnessed domestic abuse or who are in an unhealthy relationship of their own.
If you or someone you know is in one of these situations, please visit our Children and Young People section to find out how to get help.
High risk situations
If you feel your personal safety is in immediate danger and you need to access help quickly, you should call the Police. You can also call our advice line on 01204 365677. There’s a friendly voice at the end of the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our independent domestic abuse advisors are ready to step in. We’ll help you get to a safe place, talk about the difficulties you’re facing and find you all the support you need.
Refuge accommodation
In some circumstances we can offer men secure accommodation or help you to find accommodation locally. Please contact us for more details.
