The Magic Gate
A story from a child’s voice designed to raise awareness of domestic abuse while providing comfort, understanding, and hope to families.
The idea of the book started through various discussions with children, professionals, Fortalice’s fundraising team and an inspiring former Fortalice resident who became an employee in refuge. She went on to graduate from The University of Manchester in English Literature. She utilised her new degree by working in conjunction with Fortalice to write the children’s book aiming to giving something back whilst raising awareness of domestic abuse.
Author A. L. Mottley worked closely with Fortalice staff to create the story, which follows Tilly, her mum, and baby sister Lulu as they flee to safety. Through their journey, readers experience the warmth and support found in refuge, the importance of happy memories, and settling into a new home with the help of Fortalice.
Designed as both an educational and supportive resource, The Magic Gate aims to help children and families navigate the complex emotions surrounding domestic abuse, particularly those transitioning into and out of refuge. The book is also intended for use in nurseries and schools, helping young readers (aged 3 – 7) better understand safety, resilience, and new beginnings.
Research revealed a significant gap in suitable literature for children experiencing domestic abuse, positioning The Magic Gate as a vital and much-needed resource.
